anyone working on integrating a canvas plotting library ?

oetiker
We need charting abilities in several of our projects. Until now,
we have generated the charts serverside, but looking at

  http://www.deensoft.com/lab/protochart/
  http://code.google.com/p/flot/
  http://solutoire.com/flotr/

it seems that there are quite cool canvas based solutions available
today ... has anyone tried integrating them with qooxdoo (they
relie on prototype and jquery respectively) or even ported them over
to qooxdoo so that the need for prototype/jquery is not there
anymore.

cheers

I started to work on svg charts and other widgets (dials, etc). I have lots of ideas. Currently I stopped working on it because moved to new house and settling down.

If anybody could help out with svg namespace for IE, they can look at bug #1210 http://bugzilla.qooxdoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1210

When I reach some working version, I'll publish to qooxdoo contributions.

Hi guys,

some work with graphics is also here:

http://jak.seznam.cz/example/graphics/

It's in Czech so I'm able to help with this in case of interest

I'm also working on a qooxdoo graphics package.  Currently, there's low-level support for a single graphics engine that works cross-browser, but I haven't yet written the high-level functionality yet.  You can look at SimpleScalableVectorGraphics in qooxdoo-contrib.

Hi Darrel,

I used wz_graphics for some school projects, now the canvas/vml is
better choice I think:)

Hi Darrel,

I used wz_graphics for some school projects, now the canvas/vml is
better choice I think:)

Sure, wz definitely has its limitations, but so do canvas and vml, e.g. they are not cross-browser.  I'm designing SimpleScalableVectorGraphics so that various rendering engines can be plugged in.  My first engine is wz, but later engines can include canvas, vml, svg, etc.  The upper-level functions wll select the best available engine, allowing applications to be written that don't care about which browser is being used and which engine is available, and (with some limitations depending upon the engine) the details of rendering will just magically work.

hello

any progress on this subject?

i experimented with some third party libraries. most of these libs requires dom id of the canvas element for initialization. however as i can see (from the generated source code) qooxdoo canvas widget does not give any id to its canvas element. if there is any id i would implicitly use it for a third party library.
But it would be nice to see qooxdoo`s own plotting facility. is there any *plan* for this?

The jwxPlot contrib shows how to use JqPlot inside a Qooxdoo application.

One of these days, when there is nothing more important, I might try to
integrate it more nicely into Qooxdoo ...

Fritz

Fritz, if you work on this, it'd be nice to integrate it as another engine in SimpleScalableVectorGraphics. Although I haven't had the bandwidth to work on that recently, it is intended as a high-level API for applications to use, which will make use of the best available graphics rendering engine.

Cheers,

Derrell

to be honest, I don't really know when I/we will get around to that. We have
one "big" (for our company) Qooxdoo project already being approved by the
customer (just waiting for the contract) and another similiar sized one just
getting through "any time now" ...

The first one will have a graph component, so hopefully we'll have the
resources to make that jqplot-integration happen.

I'll be more than happy to make that "the Qooxdoo way" and we'll look at
SimpleScalableVectorGraphics once we get there and get in touch with you
before we start.

Cheers,
Fritz

I have a native qx classes for jqplot, but I'm too busy to make a
contribution.

I might do it pretty soon as I plan to do some freelancing jobs.

Hi Ian,

can you just post it to the mailing list "as is"? Might be useful at least
to get some ideas ...
